Choosing a baby name can be challenging, especially when you want to honor multiple individuals. A pregnant woman on Reddit sought advice regarding family drama surrounding her baby’s name.
The woman, seven months pregnant with her second child, is struggling with the naming process. Some parents opt for popular names, while others prefer unique options.
The couple has already decided to name their baby after the husband’s deceased sister.
Their first child was named after the woman’s grandfather. However, for the second child, some family members believe the grandmother should be honoured.
“We informed my grandparents of our decision several months ago. This morning, we received a group text from my grandfather requesting that we use my grandmother’s name as our daughter’s middle name.”
“He believes it would make her very happy, given all that she has done for me that we should heavily consider it and that he likes the sound of it.”
She privately messaged her grandfather explaining the situation with her husband’s sister. As she chose their son’s name, her husband gets to choose their daughter’s name.
Her grandfather expressed disappointment. This wasn’t the first time the grandparents pressured them into naming their child something specific.
“My father and I both received my grandmother’s middle name, and I know my mom wanted to give me another middle name but was pressured into naming me after my grandmother as well.”
She added: “He texted back again asking if we could do two middle names which we have considered in the beginning but the way he went about this really rubs me the wrong way that I don’t want to do it.”
Commenters supported her right to choose her baby’s name in response to her story.
One individual commented: “Asking is one thing, pressuring you to do it is another. At the end of the day it’s what you and your husband want, not anyone else. How meaningful would it even be if you were forced to do it?”
